Flimsy chemise-like high-waist dresses were worn without either corset or petticoat. They were fashionable in a variety of colours, although the wearing of a white gown was considered a sign of high social status, as they were soiled easily & required frequent replacement. Silk slipper type shoes were also fashionable. Hair was generally worn up with delicate tumbling curls & centre partings. Gentlemen wore frock coats, carried gloves & canes & wore their hair in curls brushed onto the face.
